Signs your brakes need inspecting

Not every brake noise is urgent, and not every urgent problem is loud. Here is how to tell the difference.

Squealing usually means the wear indicator is working

Many brake pads include a small metal tab designed to contact the rotor once the pad material wears down, producing a squeal. That is the pad telling you it is near the end of its life, exactly as intended.

This is worth booking for soon, but it is not normally an emergency. You have some time, so use it rather than ignoring it, because the next stage is not squealing.

Grinding is a different conversation

Grinding generally means the friction material is gone and metal is now contacting the rotor. Every stop from this point is damaging the rotor, which turns a pad replacement into a pad and rotor replacement.

It also means your braking performance is already reduced. Grinding is a come-in-now symptom, not a next-month one.

Pedal feel matters more than noise

  • A soft or spongy pedal can indicate air or moisture in the fluid, or a leak. Treat it as urgent.
  • A pedal that slowly sinks toward the floor while you hold pressure suggests a leak somewhere in the system. Stop driving and call.
  • Shuddering through the pedal or steering wheel as you slow usually points at rotor thickness variation or warping.
  • Pulling to one side when braking often means a caliper on one side is not releasing or applying properly.
  • Simply taking longer to stop than it used to is a symptom in its own right, even without any noise.

Why Ottawa is hard on brakes

Road salt is the main reason brake work here looks different from milder climates. Salt corrodes brake lines, rusts rotors, and seizes caliper slide pins, and a caliper that cannot move freely will wear one pad out while the opposite pad barely wears at all.

That is also why uneven wear between sides is a common finding here, and why a brake inspection in this city is as much about corrosion as about remaining pad thickness.

Light surface rust on the rotors after the car sits out in wet weather overnight is normal and wears off within the first few stops. Grinding that does not clear is not.
