Tire changes and repair in Ottawa
Seasonal changeovers, new tire mounting, balancing, and puncture repair. If you store your off-season set with us, your changeover appointment is the whole job. You do not need to haul tires across the city in the back seat.
Book early in the changeover rush. Every shop in Ottawa fills up in the same two windows, and the last week before a cold snap is the worst time to be looking for an appointment.
What we do with tires
Seasonal changeovers
Winter set on in the fall, summer or all-season set back on in the spring, whether the tires are on their own rims or need to be swapped over.
Mounting and balancing
New tires mounted and balanced. An unbalanced wheel shows up as a vibration that gets worse with speed and wears the tire unevenly.
Puncture repair
Punctures in the tread area can often be properly repaired from the inside. Damage to the sidewall or the shoulder generally cannot be repaired safely, and we will tell you honestly which one you have.
Free wheel-nut re-torque
Wheel nuts must be re-torqued within 100 km of any tire or rim removal. Come back and we do it free. It takes a few minutes and it matters.
Signs your tires need attention
- Tread is at or near the wear bars moulded into the grooves
- A vibration through the steering wheel that gets worse as you speed up
- One tire keeps losing pressure and needs topping up
- Uneven wear: worn on one edge, or scalloped and cupped across the tread
- Cracking in the sidewall, or visible bulges
- The tire pressure warning light comes on, especially with the first cold weather
When to switch winter tires in Ottawa
The working rule is temperature, not the calendar or the first snowfall. Winter tires are worth switching to once daytime temperatures are consistently around 7°C or below, because the rubber compound in all-season and summer tires stiffens as it gets colder and grips less, on dry pavement as well as snow.
In Ottawa that usually means going on some time in the second half of the fall and coming off once spring nights are reliably above freezing. Leaving winter tires on through a warm spring wears the soft compound down quickly, so it costs you next winter's tire.
Ontario insurers are required to offer a discount for winter tires. It is worth asking yours what it is and what proof they need.
Common questions
When should I put winter tires on in Ottawa?
Go by temperature rather than snowfall: once daytime highs are consistently around 7°C or below, winter tires grip better than all-seasons even on bare, dry roads. Book ahead. The changeover rush is short and every shop in the city is busy at once.
Do I need to come back after a tire change?
Yes. Wheel nuts need to be re-torqued within 100 km of any tire or rim removal, because the clamping load settles as the wheel seats. It takes a few minutes and we do it free. This is not optional maintenance. A wheel that loosens at speed is dangerous.
Can my tire be repaired, or do I need a new one?
It depends where the damage is. A puncture in the tread area can usually be repaired properly from the inside. Damage to the sidewall or the shoulder cannot be repaired safely at any price, and neither can a tire that has been driven on flat, because the internal structure is already damaged. We will show you which one you have.
Are all-season tires good enough for an Ottawa winter?
They are legal, but they are a compromise, and the compromise shows in the cold. All-season compounds harden below about 7°C, which costs you grip and stopping distance on cold pavement before snow is even involved. Winter tires are a meaningful safety difference here, not just a snow accessory.
