Pothole season

How do I know if my shocks or struts are worn?
The everyday test is how the car settles: push down hard on one corner and let go, and it should return and stop rather than continuing to bounce. In driving, worn units show up as floating over dips, nose-diving under braking, and clunking over bumps. Because they wear gradually, most people do not notice until the replacement makes it obvious.
I hit a pothole and the steering feels different. Is that urgent?
Get it looked at soon. A hard impact can bend a wheel, damage the tire internally, or shift the alignment, and a tire with internal damage can fail without warning. If the car is pulling, vibrating, or the wheel is now off-centre, do not leave it.
Does worn suspension really affect safety, or just comfort?
Both. Shocks and struts control how well the tire stays in contact with the road, so worn units lengthen braking distances and reduce stability in an emergency swerve. They also wear tires unevenly, which compounds the problem.
