Transmission and clutch repair in Ottawa
Transmission symptoms are worth acting on early. Slipping, harsh or delayed shifts, and unfamiliar noises tend to get worse, and driving through them usually makes the eventual repair larger.
We diagnose transmission and driveline concerns, including clutches, differentials, and rear ends, and tell you what we actually find.
What we look at
Clutches
Slipping, a high or vague biting point, difficulty getting into gear, or a shudder as you pull away.
Automatic transmission concerns
Harsh, delayed, or unpredictable shifts, slipping under load, and fluid condition, which frequently tells the story on its own.
Differentials and rear ends
Whining that changes with road speed, clunking on acceleration or deceleration, and leaks.
Driveline noise and vibration
Working out whether a vibration is driveline, wheel and tire, or suspension before anything is replaced.
Symptoms worth booking for
- Engine revs rise but the vehicle does not accelerate in proportion
- Shifts are late, harsh, or hunt between gears
- A clunk when engaging drive or reverse
- Whining, humming, or growling that changes with speed
- Difficulty getting into gear, or a clutch pedal that feels different
- Red or brown fluid on the ground where you park
- A burnt smell after driving
Common questions
Is transmission fluid a maintenance item?
On many vehicles yes, and the interval varies a great deal. Some manufacturers specify a change, others describe the fluid as lifetime fill. Fluid condition is also one of the more useful diagnostic signals available, so it is worth having looked at if you are noticing symptoms.
Can I keep driving if the transmission is slipping?
We would not recommend it. Slipping generates heat, and heat is what damages transmissions, so continuing to drive tends to enlarge the repair. If it is slipping, book in rather than waiting to see whether it settles down.
How long does a clutch last?
It depends far more on how the vehicle is driven than on distance. City traffic and hill starts are much harder on a clutch than highway driving. There is no useful average, which is why we diagnose rather than estimate from an odometer reading.
Can you tell me the cost before you see it?
Not honestly. Transmission symptoms range from something minor to a major repair, and the same description can mean either. We would rather look at it and tell you what it actually is. Call the shop and we will arrange to get it in.
