When to switch to winter tires in Ottawa
Go by temperature, not by the first snowfall. Here is the rule most shops actually use, and when to book so you are not scrambling.
The 7°C rule
The working threshold is around 7°C. Once daytime highs are consistently at or below that, winter tires grip better than all-seasons, and that is true on bare, dry pavement, not only on snow.
The reason is the rubber compound rather than the tread pattern. All-season and summer compounds stiffen as they cool, and a stiffer tire puts less rubber in contact with the road. Winter compounds are formulated to stay pliable in the cold, which is why they keep working when the others have gone hard.
This is why waiting for snow is the wrong trigger. By the time Ottawa gets its first real snowfall, there have usually been weeks of mornings cold enough that your all-seasons were already the worse choice.
When to book in Ottawa
The changeover rush is short and it hits every shop in the city at once. The week a cold snap arrives is the single worst time to be looking for an appointment, because everyone else is looking too.
Booking earlier in the fall costs you nothing. A winter tire on a mild October day wears very slightly faster and is otherwise fine, which is a much smaller problem than driving on all-seasons through a hard freeze because nowhere had a slot.
Coming off in the spring
Take them off once overnight temperatures are reliably above freezing. Leaving winter tires on through a warm spring wears the soft compound down quickly, and that wear comes straight out of next winter's tire.
Spring is also the moment to have the suspension and alignment looked at, because by then the vehicle has been through a full season of freeze-thaw potholes.
Two things worth knowing
- Ontario insurers are required to offer a discount for winter tires. Ask yours what it is and what proof they want. It is not always applied automatically.
- Wheel nuts must be re-torqued within 100 km of any tire or rim removal. We do it free, and it is not optional maintenance.
- If storing a second set is the problem, the tires can stay at the shop instead of taking up half your garage or balcony.
- Tires mounted on their own rims make every future changeover faster and cheaper than swapping tires on and off a single set of wheels.
