Getting your car ready for an Ottawa winter
Cold does not create most winter breakdowns. It exposes problems that were already there and merely tolerable in warmer weather.
The battery is the big one
Battery capacity falls as temperature drops, at exactly the moment the engine needs more current to turn over oil that has thickened in the cold. That combination is why a battery which was merely weak in October is the one that strands you in January.
Age alone is a poor guide. A load test tells you what the battery can actually deliver now, which is the number that matters on a cold morning. Have it tested before winter rather than after it fails.
Coolant is not just a summer concern
Coolant that is old or has been topped up with too much water loses freeze protection. A cooling system that was marginal through the summer can fail outright on the first hard-cold morning.
Checking the coolant's freeze point is quick and worth doing before the temperature drops rather than after.
Worth checking before the cold sets in
- Winter tires fitted, with enough tread left for a full season.
- Battery load-tested, and the terminals clean and tight.
- Coolant strength and level checked.
- Brakes inspected, because corrosion from last winter's salt shows up now.
- Wiper blades replaced if they are streaking, and washer fluid rated for freezing temperatures.
- All exterior lights working, given how early it gets dark here.
- Block heater cord checked for damage if your vehicle has one.
Short trips are their own problem
A lot of winter driving in Ottawa is short hops where the engine never fully reaches operating temperature. That lets fuel and moisture accumulate in the oil instead of burning off, which is harder on the engine than the distance suggests.
Most manufacturers publish a shorter severe-service maintenance interval that covers exactly this pattern. If your winter driving is mostly short trips, that schedule is probably the one that applies to you.
