What an inspection looks at
Structure and corrosion
Underbody and structural corrosion, and evidence of previous accident repair. In a salt-belt climate this is often the finding that matters most.
Mechanical condition
Engine, transmission, and driveline condition, plus fluid condition and leaks.
Brakes, tires, and suspension
Remaining life on wear items, so you know what you will be spending in the first year rather than discovering it later.
Scan for stored fault codes
Including codes that have been recently cleared, which is itself worth knowing before you buy.
What to look hard at on an Ottawa car
Rust is the defining issue for used vehicles in this region, and the visible paint bubbles are rarely the real problem. Structural corrosion on frame rails, subframes, brake and fuel lines, and suspension mounting points is what determines whether a car has years left or is nearing the end, and almost none of it is visible while the vehicle is on the ground.
This is also why a vehicle that spent its life somewhere without salted roads can be in noticeably better structural condition than a local car of the same age and mileage.

How do I book a pre-purchase inspection?
Call the shop at 613-596-6300. Online booking is not currently available for inspections because they need coordinating with the seller, and it is worth a quick conversation to arrange a time that works for everyone.
What if the seller will not let me have it inspected?
Treat that as an answer in itself. A seller with nothing to hide has no reason to refuse an independent inspection at a shop of your choosing. It is one of the most useful pieces of information you can get about a private sale.
Is this the same as a safety standards certificate?
No. A safety standards certificate is an Ontario requirement for transferring registration and checks that specific safety items meet a defined standard on that day. A pre-purchase inspection is for you as a buyer: it covers overall condition, what is worn, and what is likely to cost you soon. A car can pass a safety and still be a poor buy.
Will you tell me whether to buy it?
We will tell you what condition it is in and what we would expect it to need, which is the part you cannot get from the seller. Whether that price is right for that car is your call, but you will be making it with real information.
